Qualified Charitable Distribution
What does QCD stand for? Simply put, it stands for tax-smart giving if you're 70½ or older.
While you can start taking distributions from your individual retirement accounts (IRAs) as early as age 59½, you're required to do so beginning at age 73. Normally, these distributions are subject to income taxes. Made permanent by Congress in 2015, the IRA Charitable Rollover provision allows you to donate up to $105,000 ($200,000 per couple) per calendar year from your IRA to the WMU Foundation once you've reached age 70½. Also known as qualified charitable distributions (QCDs), these gifts aren't considered taxable income when made directly from an IRA to the WMU Foundation.
Benefits of a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from an IRA
- Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $108,000 from your IRA to Western Michigan University Foundation.
- May satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
- Reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions.
- Make a gift that is not subject to the deduction limits on charitable gifts.
- Help more Broncos pursue their purpose and thrive.
How a QCD gift works
- Contact your retirement plan administrator to make a gift from your QCD to the WMU Foundation.
- Your QCD funds will be directly transferred to our organization to help the University and our students.
- QCD gifts do not qualify for a charitable deduction.
- Contact us if you wish for your gift to be used for a specific purpose.
Gifts from your IRA
If you are 70½ or older, you can use your IRA to fulfill your charitable goals. You can use the "Make a Gift From My IRA" tool to contact your IRA custodian and make a qualified charitable distribution. We will acknowledge your generous gifts as a QCD, which may satisfy your RMD, if applicable.
