Carl Doubleday: Serving WMU and the Community

Not everyone can say, "I love coming to work each day and I owe my entire professional happiness to Western Michigan University." Carl Doubleday, Associate Director of the School of Music, made this statement when asked why he decided to make provisions in his estate plan for the School. He further stated that it was one way he could give back to the University "for all it has given me."

Carl Doubleday's love and commitment to the School of Music and Western Michigan University began when he entered WMU as a freshman. He subsequently received two degrees, a Bachelor of Music (Public School Music) degree in 1966 and a Master of Music (Theory and Composition) degree in 1968.

Serving as an administrator in the School of Music since 1968, Carl's list of accomplishments within and outside the University is extensive. Included among them are his involvement with the School's highly acclaimed SEMINAR summer program for high school students, his service on the University Cultural Events Committee, the coordination of production services for the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival's Dalton Center venue, and his active membership in the American Guild of Organists, where he has served as the editor of its monthly newsletter since 1977.

Over the years, Carl has received numerous awards for his commitment and dedication to the arts and to the University. Among those received are the WMU Distinguished Service Award, the College of Fine Arts Outstanding Service Award and the Community Medal of Arts Award presented by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo.

Carl is somewhat a legend in the School of Music and is referred to as the "walking, talking encyclopedia" on the history of music at WMU. Many seek Carl out when needing information and it seems that he magically can find what is needed. Most importantly, Carl is known for his warm smile and friendly ways and his willingness to be of assistance. In brief, Carl lives his love of music and the University. Thanks to his generosity in establishing the Carl W. Doubleday School of Music Operations Endowment, Carl is assisting the School in "Securing Its Future."
